DIVERSITY

Diversity is the presence and recognition of difference, which may be visible or invisible. There are innumerable facets of diversity, including race, ethnicity, age, sex, gender identity/expression, sexual orientation, disability, socioeconomic status, religion, and national origin, among others. Diversity is understanding that some differences provide privilege while others perpetuate disadvantages. At MDCGC, we seek to create an environment that promotes diversity within our profession, fostering inclusion and enabling provision of better services to underrepresented communities.

EQUITY

Equity is ensuring that opportunities, and access to opportunities, are provided to all, based on what is needed. Equity is different from equality, where all groups of people receive the same number and type of resources or support, regardless of needs or circumstances. At MDCGC, we are focused on creating opportunities that close the gap for those who are underrepresented both within our profession and in the communities that we serve.

INCLUSION

Inclusion is the way we create environments in which an individual or group can feel accepted, respected, and valued. Inclusion is making room for difference. Inclusivity strives to create a sense of belonging for all individuals, regardless of different identities. At MDCGC, we seek to foster an inclusive environment within our profession and for the underrepresented communities that we serve.

JUSTICE

Justice is the fair and ethical treatment of all individuals. Achieving justice  requires active work to break down barriers and address inequalities rooted in differentials of power and privilege. These barriers are essentially the “isms” in society: racism, classism, sexism, etc. At MDCGC, we believe that we have a responsibility to create a just environment within our profession and the underrepresented communities that we serve.
